The Orkney Islands are green with farmland, with areas of moorland and big fishing lochs, fringed by quiet and beautiful beaches. Orkney has the greatest concentration of archaeology in Scotland, with an average of three archaeological sites per square mile, including massive standing stones and a prehistoric village with 5,000-year-old houses.
The Shetland Islands are wilder, with breath-taking rugged scenery and a dramatic coastline. Shetland is closer to Bergen in Norway than it is to Edinburgh, so has a unique Norse heritage with an amazing Viking fire festival to see. The ferry voyage from Aberdeen sails over 200 miles from the Granite City and, on the indirect sailing, stops briefly in Orkney before continuing to Shetland. This is the longest internal ferry route in the UK. The ship departs at teatime, and passengers can book their own cabins, to wake up the next morning in Shetland's capital, Lerwick.
Alternatively travel to Orkney’s port of Stromness from Scrabster, on the northern coast of the UK Mainland. This 90-minute journey on MV Hamnavoe is the only sailing to Orkney which passes the iconic sea stack, the Old Man of Hoy.
